Jared McDaris
Writer and Ensemble member, Jared has been prolific in his ability to create scathing indictments of the status quo while still being hilarious and surreal in a uniquely SRD way.
It has been said the times are rarely precedented and this was just as true in the holiday season of 2021 as it is now. Was this bit originally aired in December. Yes. Is it still hilarious? Yes, again. Bet on it.

Once upon a time, a little wooden boy ventured out into the snowy wood. As should be no surprise to anyone, this works out poorly in the short term but well in the long term. How will he survive? What sorts of dangers and people will he meet? There, my friends, lies a story.

Some stories are too good to be true but so good we’re willing to let go of verity in favor of our own happiness. These legends can take hold of the hearts of a nation, becoming part of the very fabric of its identity. Some of them are just bullshit though. We should probably do something about that.

If you ever have questions about the afterlife, you’re in the right place. We have the best luck with ghost hunters managing to actually touch the other side or at least having the other side touch them. Sometimes, even paranormal investigators should be careful wat they wish for.

Popular culture since 1891 just wouldn’t be quite as popular or as cultured without the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, specifically the one which are now in the public domain and fair for plebs like us to use with abandon. So, please enjoy this mixing of cultured, highbrow literature with time travel silliness and social commentary. Stay tuned for part 2 as, legally speaking, there’s nothing to stop us from doing it again.

Shoot for the stars we said. Perhaps we never thought anyone would actually follow through on that as a literal life goal. Yet, the number of people with holiday snapshots from beyond the von Karman line is growing already. In this fantasy short about aliens, that is. What an awful signifier of the wealth equalities present in this fictional world private space travel is…

This spectacular monologue come to us from the Fluffy Foods Network which licensed this piece and this piece only out to ours. Why might they have done that? There’s no telling but we think you’ll agree that there are only a few things more precious in the mind of the average American than pineapple upside down cake and the Fourth of July. We think that this short is likely to remind you of at least one thing that should be right there on the top of your own list of things to hold dear.

We all have our demons. This sketch does too. They’re just pretty literal. You know, super literal. We figure that might actually be a little bit nice if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the figurative stuff going on all over the place.
Also, if you’re checking this out on release day, happy American Thanksgiving. It’s a complicated holiday but it comes with pie. The Production Team of Starlight Radio Dreams would like to acknowledge that the land on which we live and do our work is occupied land unceded by the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations. Many other tribes such as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, and Fox also called this area home. Their losses and the cost of our current state are too great to be appreciated fully. Let us gather mindful of this debt.

When one is a little wooden boy, trying to be good and do what you re told, the gig economy is perfect. You can be told what to do by people who have never met you. Heck, they don’t even need to really care that you exist, so long as you bring their burger lickety-split and don’t forget their dry cleaning on the way. Can Samuel Spruce make good as a food delivery driver against all odds? Perhaps the people who live in this big creepy house know.

Here at SRD we love tradition. Mostly because there are few things sillier than sticking to a decision that a dead person made in different circumstances when it’s not doing you any favors. The counterpoint, of course, is maypole dancing, fine old tradition that everyone enjoys unironically for the good of the community’s future. Have you ever danced a maypole? Our listener demographics indicate you likely have.

We don’t know how to describe this one besides to say, “imagine if Downton Abbey was absurdist and super aware of the owner class.” This show come to us from the fringe part of the BBC where they make things that can’t be shown within 300 miles of the Queen. The Showtime Podcast Network has, at best, a tenuous relationship with reality and this month’s cavalcade of cryptids is a testament to our ability to get the best content available even from hosts and presenters who would otherwise be hesitant to release their content outside of blurry podcatchers and the overactive imaginations of people who did see something at some point.

There comes a time in the life of every little wooden boy when he must leave the confines of his fathers house and go into the world to make something of himself. We’ve been over that with Samuel Spruce. Sadly, making something of himself is a little more complex than it once was and becoming a real boy is seeming farther and farther away. This isn’t going to dampen the spirits of an optimist like Sam though. So, he’s taken a job as a sanitation engineer; a job which is bound to teach him a great deal about society and economy.

When it comes time to do a disgusting job, attitude is essential. Luckily, what Sam Spruce lacks in worldly experience, knowledge of labor laws and a circulatory system is certainly made up for by his plucky attitude. Samuel Spruce is a little wooden boy in the fine tradition of being a toy given life and a quest beyond one’s grasp to fully comprehend. The trouble, sadly, is that things have gotten significantly more banal and loveless since the old fairy tale days. Will Sam’s plucky attitude and optimism be enough to help him create human capital and become a real boy? Head on over to your favorite podcatcher and ask for Starlight Radio Dreams to find out.

Have you ever sat at your workstation pressing buttons and pulling coffee from the tube only to think, “there’s a lot of stuff I’d do differently if I were in charge around here? The people in charge don’t know how to press buttons as well as I do. Heck, I bet they don’t even know how hard it is to press buttons all day or how often the coffee tube runs out.” Well you’re right. They probably don’t. It’s even true in space. In this episode, the heroic space fighter pilots of Lionstar continue trying to get their spaceships flying. Before they do, they’re going to have to organize a feudal civilization and there’s only one manager available.

This will be the final podcast episode of Starlight Radio Dreams for the time being. The crew here at SRD are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done over the course of the pandemic. Since October 2020, it's been just Ansel, Jared, and Kat at the helm of the good ship SRD. Although we are no longer able to maintain our pace of production, we are deeply grateful to our Patreon backers and subscribers as well as the cast members, guests, and other artists who have been instrumental in keeping these radio dreams afloat.
It is tough to say goodbye. We leave you with the pluckiness of Sam Spruce, wondering what beautiful opportunities tomorrow will bring. Please keep your eyes on this space for more information about what comes next. In the meantime, Keep Laughing and Keep Dreaming.
